Work package 3: Establishing a European ribotyping nomenclature reference database for Clostridium difficile

Leader:

  • Dr. Val Hall, Anaerobe Reference Laboratory, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom

Other participants in consortium:

  • Dr. Ed J. Kuijper, Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands
  • Prof. dr. Mark H. Wilcox, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Leeds & Health Protection Agency, England, United Kingdom
  • Dr. ALexander Indra, AGES-Institut für medizinische Mikrobiologie und Hygiene, Vienna, Austria

Objectives:

  1. Build up and maintain a ribotyping nomenclature reference database for Clostridium difficile.
  2. Provide free of charge service to MS reference laboratories for sharing C. difficile reference strains, entitling ribotypes numbers for newly identified C. difficile strains and for accessibility to the database.
  3. Provide a written document on SOPs and propose a guideline for the ribotyping of Clostridium difficile isolates in EU.
  4. Provide a written document on SOP and propose a guideline for the use of Clostridium difficile molecular typing database, and on its structure (i.e. meta-dataset etc.).
  5. Provide Extenal Quality Assesment (EQA) for national reference laboratories in the MS for ribotyping and assessment of antimicrobial resistance of C. difficile strains (yearly or 6-monthly).
  6. Perform training workshops for national CDI-reference laboratories in collaboration with Work Package 2.
  7. Develop, in collaboration with Work Package 4, a plan on how to assure a European CDI database with representative samples of isolates from MS.
